Nicole Wilkerson, the founder and director of New Leaf Ayurveda, has been doing profound Ayurvedic healing work for nearly 10 years, and chronic pain and injury massage for 25 years.

In that time she has helped hundreds of people regain functionality, health, and an understanding of what health requires of us. Her practice has grown and thrived primarily by word-of-mouth and the merit of her work.

She has become well-known in the Ayurvedic community for helping clients who suffer from advanced and serious disease-processes.

Nicole’s early life was rife with polarity. Raised by a rocket scientist and a therapist in the aftermath of Vietnam, and surrounded by fundamentalist religion, she was exposed to harsh yet rich intellectual and emotional content. She channeled much of her young anger and confusion into activism against “injustice”. Working for a runaway/homeless youth hotline and PETA, being a counselor in a women’s shelter, and all the while taking courses on feminism, sociology, anthropology and design.

Following her truth-seeking nature (and deep sadness/inner confusion), she entered into therapy and was eventually led to meditation, profound spiritual teaching and Raja Yoga. A practitioner of Raja Yoga Meditation for 15 years now, she “put in her time and changed her mind!” And interestingly, studied in India for meditation first, not Ayurveda. However, Ayurveda was always in the backdrop of her spiritual life, “even if I didn’t know it.”

“It didn’t formally come together for me until I understood the ‘Sattvic diet’ and shed years worth of Ama. Dr. Paul Dugliss gave me Ayurvedic ‘shaktipat’ for sure. His heart was so open.”

Nicole received unique Ayurvedic training from Dr. Paul Dugliss, who emphasizes a consciousness-based model of Ayurvedic healing. From the beginning of her training, she demonstrated a singular knack for translating theory and knowledge into practical use.

Nicole describes her approach as being experiential in nature, and always emphasizes self-knowledge over blind faith. She herself has devoted years to deep meditation practice, working for hours in silence, which has developed her skills in adept listening and right action.

“I got an Ayurvedic training that was rare. Not just the clinical experience of sitting by the doctor day in and day out, but it was a true student/disciple relationship. Dr. Dugliss was devoted to my learning and I was devoted to his teaching. We spoke almost every day for 3 years. It was transformational for me.”

What to Expect

In addition to being an expert in Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis, Nicole is extremely insightful with her clients, and combined with years of clinical experience, has experienced great success in being able to determine the root cause of many clients’ distress.

Because Ayurveda treats the person, not the disease, she is able to provide help for many clients who have run into dead-ends using the Western medical paradigm.

  • - In-depth Interview regarding health history and life story
  • - Ayurvedic Pulse diagnosis, visual assessment and tongue assessment are used to determine Prakruti (Birth Dosha) and Vrikruti (Current Dosha)
  • - Goal-setting, both personal and Ayurvedic
  • - Prioritizing short term and long term goals, and devising a plan

Ayurvedic Counseling

A key ingredient of Nicole’s plan of action is her understanding that by addressing the mental (manomayakosha), emotional (vjinanamayakosha) and spiritual (anandamayakosha) root causes of her clients’ complaints, she honors and considers the intrinsic oneness of our physical body with these other “bodies”, and how the imbalances are being affected by them.

Indeed, Nicole’s skill in Ayurvedic Counseling has become, for many of her clients, one of the most important aspects of their successes at New Leaf. Using the discernment tools of Ayurvedic Counseling, she brings both compassion AND a reality check.

“I value Self-Awareness. If you don’t know what you’re dealing with, how can you change? Shine a loving light on the cause and effect. Reveal the truth and then take down the paper tiger - this is the path to healing.”

Nicole is the partner of Sagar Hallal, and is mother of 2 and 4 year olds, both home-birthed. She also is co-parenting 4 older children, including 3 who are now teenagers, so she is versed in the complex challenges of family life as an urbanite. Living a dharmic life has meant honoring her purpose or usefulness in life, whether it was easy or not. “At the end of my life, I want to be able to look back and say ‘I did it!’”.

“What are two qualities that Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King have in common? Curiosity and courage. These two things will change the world.”
